Coaches Quick-Start-Guide to Social Media

posted by jimharshaw on March 8, 2010, 10:37am
This is going to be short and simple because you don't have time to worry about this kind of stuff right?  You're putting out other, more important fires today, right ? I ask you this... what is more important than building a community of supporters around your program?  So, here's the quick list:
  1. Start a Facebook Fan Page (not Group).  Thousands of your fans are already on Facebook and getting their news there (and yes, you have thousands of fans).  Pages have tons of funtionality that you really don't need to worry about until you get over 100 fans.  At that point you can get a custom URL (like www.facebook.com/riotsportsmarketing).  Then you can add tabs and links to your online donations page, your email newsletter sign-up page, your text message alerts sign-up pages, etc.  These are more advanced for those wanting to start a riot.  For now, just start a Facebook Fan Page and invite some friends.
  2. Get a Twitter account.  Some experts recommend getting a Twitter account just so that no one else can claim your name and use it erroneously.  This is a good method for me to scare you into getting started on Twitter too!   I didn't use mine for the first 6 months I had it.  I gradually worked my way into it and discovered that there is real value in Twitter.  There is a conversation going on in the Twitterverse about your sport, your program, and your community.  You should have a voice there too.
  3. Start a blog.  I know, I know.  You think blogs are for political junkies, techie geeks and business people.  Wrong.  they are for you and your fans. You're reading one right now.  Blogs are simply this- a simple means of posting news quickly in a chronological order (newest posts at the top).  Everyone wants a beautiful website with a dozen pages.  Each page that you create just adds work to your plate.  You have to maintain and update these pages or your site will look dead.  An out-of-date site is worse than no website.  I know that you have "a guy" that is doing this for you but what about when his kid graduates or when he's on vacation and you win the big tournament?  Create a blog where you can post information quickly and easily so that your fans have a reliable place to get up-to-date information regularly.

Yes, I know that you have fires to put out that are right at your feet.  But the biggest fire is raging up ahead (called budget cuts, Title IX or indifferent administrators).  Start building!

The greater the chaos, the greater the opportunity

"The greater the problem, the greater the chaos, the greater the opportunity"

There is a problem in wrestling.  Maybe several.  The one on which I choose to focus is the lack of marketing of our sport.  The lack of an organized system to market our sport.  Sure... I've seen your efforts... you run a promotion and it kinda works.  You call the newspaper and maybe you get an article.  You start a blog, post for a month and then trail off.
There is chaos.... or at least a lack of a system.  This is a GREAT OPPORTUNITY for you and your program and all of those that care for your program!

End the chaos.  Create a system then hand it off.  If that is too daunting, ask us to help

What Spiderman can teach us....

"With great power comes great responsibility" Stan Lee, creator of Spiderman

In practical terms what does that mean to you and I?  Well, if you're the coach then you hold the reins to your program- not just teaching single legs and double legs.  But being the leader of your alumni, your fan base, your athletes, your parents.  How do you lead them?  You lead best by serving.

A few weeks ago our pastor talked about how the Roman soldiers used to be able to basically comandeer citizens to carry their heavy hear- sword, shield, etc. for one mile.  During that mile the soldier is in charge.  At the end of that mile he would take the gear back and continue on his way.  What if the citizen said, "No, I will continue to carry your gear for another mile."  Who is in charge that second mile?
Exactly.  You become a leader by serving.
Serve your people.

Make it easy for them to be a fan.  Create a Facebook page.  Create a blog.  Add video content to your page.  Send press releases regularly to the media.  Create fun and exciting events to bring them together.

What's that?  You're too busy already?   Well, yes.  I know.  Coaching is more time consuming and difficult than anyone outside the profession will ever know (except the spouses).  That's why you need systems to grow.  Just like any successful business.  It's not run by the seat of the owner's pants.  It's run by systems.  That's why the Riot is so successful.  It's built on systems.

The Microcosm

posted by jimharshaw on August 1, 2009, 12:22pm

I just listened to a podcast interview with Cary Kolat, read a blog about Junior Nationals, watched a video of Joe Warren training.

If you've been to any of the major wrestling websites in the past year you'd see that they are all now taking advantage of the social media and web 2.0 tools available.  Maybe it was Flo Wrestling that nudged them along or maybe it was just that it was time for them to take the leap.  Themat.com has long had popular message boards but they now have more video than before.  Intermat.com, TheWrestlingMall.com, Wrestling 411.tv and the new Theopenmat.com all have great content too- most importantly blogs, video and podcasts. This has made it easier for us wrestling fans to get information as well as to meet the important figures in our wrestling world.  This is exciting stuff!  If you're not taking advantage you should be.  Our wrestling community is getting stronger because of these new tools and developments.

Your program is simply a microcosm of the larger wrestling community.  Are you strengthening your community of fans, alumni and supporters of your program?  Why not?
